The Ecological Impact of Organic Food Production Techniques

ASPARAGUS THAI PESTICIDE What sets organic food apart from conventionally grown produce is the way these products are handled and grown. Fresh organic food produce, unknown to many, are products of farming techniques that are ethical and ecologically-friendly.

Here are some reasons that make organic food farming the most environmentally responsible method of food production:

1. Organic farming nourishes soil properties.

Organic farming helps maintain healthy soil. Natural cultivation methods are way better than chemical soil management techniques as these effectively build up organic soil matter. When treated with harmful chemicals and other synthetic fertilizers, soil stability or fertility is diminished.

In addition to enriching soil properties, organic farming also prevents soil erosion. In a study conducted by Meadows in 1987, it was shown that organic fields had thicker layers of topsoil (in particular, eight more inches) than chemically treated agricultural fields and had limited erosion.

Increased organic matter content has positive effects on soil fertility. In fact, the use of organic matter accentuates the nutrient absorption capacities of soil systems.

2. Organic farming reduces bad green gas emissions.

A study conducted by Rodale Institute in the United States revealed that organic agricultural fields combat and actually reduce carbon dioxide emissions and therefore help regulate the harmful onslaught of climate change. According to a report by News 24, non-organic farming may be responsible for 14 percent of man-made greenhouse gasses which heavily contribute to the worsening condition of global warming.

3. Organic Farming reduces environmental exposure to hazardous chemicals and toxins from pesticides.

Continued use of pesticides and synthetic fertilizers results in a variety of negative ecological issues. Synthetic pesticides enable weed species, insects, bacteria and fungi to develop disease-resistant features, making it more problematic for farmers to fend off these plant enemies.

Pesticides which contain chemicals and other toxins, once sprayed on plants, may also contaminate the soil, air and water supply. Oftentimes, the effects of these harmful pesticides may stick around for longer periods, sometimes extending for years. Worst, these dangerous substances found in pesticides may be ingested by humans, especially those who do not consume organic food.

4. Organic Farming Conserves Water and Supports Water Health

American Rivers, an organisation in America committed to preserving rivers, conducted a study which revealed that rivers may be polluted mainly by runoff coming from non-organic agricultural farms which utilise harmful pesticides and synthetic fertilizers. Adherence to organic farming methods may keep rivers and other water bodies pollutant-free and clean by stopping the polluted runoff.

Nature’s Glory Mantra: Choose Organic Food, Save the Environment

These ecological benefits cannot be downplayed, not now when it’s a necessity to be more environmentally conscious.

Nature’s Glory understands that the environment deserves more respect, and proof of this is our continued support for organic food and organic food delivery in Singapore.

We like to advocate the wonders of organic food, and how organic food can help save the environment and change more lives on a holistic level. Our support for organic food, apart from being a business endeavour, manifests our commitment to promote healthy living and our greater responsibility of caring for Mother Earth.
