Busting the Alkaline Water Myth

waterfallAlkaline water has been lauded for a wide range of purported health benefits. Not surprisingly, its popularity has attracted the attention (and, consequently, the scrutiny) of chemists, researchers, medical practitioners, and other health professionals.

Thus, the question that begs to be answered now is this: is alkaline water really safe and effective?

The proponents of advocates of alkaline water claim that it has a variety of health benefits, including but not limited to 1) slowing down cell aging, 2) neutralizing acid in the bloodstream, and 3) reducing damage caused by free radicals.

While these claims sound promising, it is important to note that these claims are being heavily contested at present.

First Question: Does Alkaline Water Really Bring Health Benefits?

People who have tried drinking ionized water often report health benefits during the first thirty days. However, it must be noted that artificial alkalinity in artificially created alkaline water brings with it not only health benefits but also side effects.

Upon initial intake of artificial alkaline water, the body becomes more hydrated and receives more antioxidants. Unfortunately, these positive effects do not last for long as the body eventually becomes stressed due to the artificial alkalinity of ionized water.

To clarify, artificial alkaline water is produced through the use of water ionizers as opposed to those naturally occurring in springs. To generate ionized water, water ionizers split the water molecules using electricity.

The problem with ionized water is that it leads the body to assume that it is receiving more alkaline materials than there actually is. We will discuss this in greater detail in the next question.

Second Question: Is there Such Thing as Being Too Alkaline?

Earlier, we have mentioned that excessive intake of artificially generated alkaline water can be more harmful than beneficial to the body.

It must, however, be stressed that ionized water is innately harmful. On the contrary, drinking naturally alkaline water on a daily basis contributes to excellent health as alkaline minerals help buffer acid.

What must be regulated is the intake of artificial ionized water as one can become too alkaline, which can disrupt the body’s pH level. Unlike drinking natural alkaline water, drinking ionized water requires measurement of the body’s pH and regulating the consumption.

Third Question:  What Are the Side Effects of Artificial Alkaline Water?

It is worth noting that ionized water can only neutralize acidity in the upper bowel and in the stomach as these are the places where it has direct contact.

However, since ionized water often have very high levels of alkalinity, daily consumption can make the upper bowel overly alkaline. Some common side effects are as follows:

  1. Hypertension
  2. Erratic heart behavior
  3. Stabbing side pains
  4. Urinary track infection
  5. Bladder infection

Water ionizers can be expensive. As such, it is important to fully understand the side effects and health benefits of alkaline water before shelling out the money for it.

While ionized water may bring a number of positive effects at the outset, it may cause certain problems in the long run.
