Alkaline Water Ionizers: Potential Dangers

While producing alkaline water at home is certainly less expensive than purchasing commercially-available ionized water, there are certain considerations that one must bear in mind, especially those pertaining to health and safety.


Water Quality: Important Considerations

Any health professional will tell you that drinking lots of water can help prevent, and even improve a number of medical conditions.

With the availability of different water products—from distilled water to alkaline water—it is important to know what constitutes drinking water. Here are qualities that one should look for:

  1. Tasteless, odorless, and colorless.
  2. Free of harmful chemicals.
  3.  Of the right pH.

The Dangers of Alkaline Water Ionizers

Water ionizers may seem like a handy solution to a variety of health problems, but they still present a number of dangers that one must be wary of. Among these dangers are the following:

  1. Alkaline water ionizers are not the most efficient filtration systems. Despite what producers of water ionizers might claim, the reality is that ionizers do not filter out all the harmful chemicals in the water. After all, a water ionizer’s main purpose is to alkalize the water. The quality of the alkaline water that can be produced using a home water ionizer remains largely dependent on the quality of the water being ionized.

  2. Ionized water has higher concentration of metals. Water ionizers not only lead to water wastage (alkaline water produced from ionizers constitutes only a portion of the water placed in the ionizer), it also concentrates a higher amount of metals in a lower amount of water. While metals in very small amounts often do not pose any danger, high levels of such in water can interfere with the thyroid glands and trigger a hormonal imbalance. Also, metals are toxic in large doses.

  3. The alkalizing process can trigger certain chemical reactions in water contaminants. Even treated water is not completely contaminant-free. Even after the filtration process, traces of pharmaceuticals, toxic substances, and other compounds remain in the water, albeit in small and often unhazardous doses. However, the ionizing process can cause certain reactions with these unknown contaminants, thereby producing more harmful compounds. Unless there is certainty to the actual composition of the water, using a water ionizer will continue to pose a certain health risk.

  4. Alkaline water may interfere with the digestive system. The body has its own ways of regulating body processes, and suddenly increasing its alkalinity might do more harm than good. A sudden increase in the stomach’s pH level may actually prompt the stomach to produce more hydrochloric acid in an attempt to neutralize the sudden increase in the level of alkalinity. Instead of promoting better digestion, alkaline water might actually cause digestive problems.

Alkaline water is marketed as a cure-all miracle water alternative. However, medical practitioners and health professionals remain rather skeptical to its benefits and effects.

Given the foregoing, it might be smarter to switch to naturally-produced alkaline water, such as those found in springs, to avoid health risks.
